What are your top ten hymns of all time?
I grew up attending the Church of God in Bristow, OK. Shout out. We sang hymns every single Sunday. And Sunday night. And Wednesday night…. minus the occasional special song from the Baker Trio or the Men’s Quartet!
And to this day, I LOVE singing Hymns. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about modern day worship songs, but there’s something special about the classic hymns.
Ken Coleman and I recently asked our listeners on the Catalyst Podcast what their favorite hymns of all time were, and we got a lot of responses. Lots of different responses.
So I wanted to bring it up here as well… What are your top hymns of all time?
Here’s my top ten:
1. Nothing But the Blood
2. Amazing Grace
3. It is Well With My Soul
4. Jesus Paid it All
5. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
6. Victory in Jesus
7. Blessed Assurance
8. All Hail the Power of Jesus Name
9. How Great Thou Art
10. a. Come Thou Fount
10. b. Holy Holy Holy
And if you are looking for a GREAT album that includes the classic hymns, check out Page CXVI and their collection of songs. Highly recommended.
How about you? What are your favorite hymns?
My goal in my worship planning is at least 1 hymn a week. It could be a modern hymn such as In Christ Alone, Stronger (Hillsong), Before the Throne, How Deep the Father’s Love for Us, Psalm 62, etc. I always try to find fresh arrangements of timeless hymns as well, and there are many to choose from with so many great artists making great music for the church to sing! I also grew up singing hymns and there is a special quality about singing these great, foundational songs. Here is my top ten”ish” (in no particular order):
1. Great is Thy Faithfulness
2. Amazing Grace
3. It is Well With My Soul
4. Jesus Paid it All
5. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
6. Come Thou Fount
7. Blessed Assurance
8. All Hail the Power of Jesus Name
9. How Great Thou Art
10. Holy Holy Holy
Honorable mentions: ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus, Victory in Jesus, My Jesus I Love Thee
I ditto all your choices and add: Precious Lord, Sweet Hour of Prayer, and Come Ye Disconsolate.
I think your list has all of my favorite hymns on it, but Come Thou Fount will always, ALWAYS be my favorite hymn. The third verse is so powerful and each and every time I sing it, it practically reduces me to tears:
“O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.”
Not sure if these are my top but they are 10 of of the ones I love -
1. Trust and Obey
2. What Can Wash Away My Sin
3. Lord I’m Coming Home
4. How Great Thou Art
5. It Is Well With My Soul
6. It Only Takes A Spark/Pass It On
7. Nothing But the Blood
8. Rescue the Parishing
9. Count Your Blessings
10. Jesus Paid It All
O For a Thousand Tongues To Sing
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above
A Mighty Fortress
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Day by Day
Rock of Ages (to the new Sovereign Grace melody)
A Debtor to Mercy Alone
Praise Him! Praise Him!
1. Rock Of Ages (Toplady)
2. There Is A Fountain
3. The Solid Rock
4. Be Thou My Vision
5. Man Of Sorrows (Hallelujah What A Savior)
6. Let Us Love And Sing And Wonder
7. Abide With Me
8. Jesus Paid It All
9. Come Thou Fount
10. O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
Love your list, especially love that “Victory in Jesus” is on it. Never dreamed that would be the song that so freely came from my lips to put my baby to sleep as an adult, but alas it is and I love it.
I would add “Be Thou My Vision” which is my #1.

Great list! I would have to add two of my favorites “Before the Throne of God Above” and “Jesus, I my Cross have Taken.”
I can’t believe no one mentioned The Love of God
