I would have to say it's a tight race between Meyer & Carroll. These guys win the big games & that counts for a lot. However, Meyer gets the edge for me for a few reasons. First, the Utah program. Not only did he turn it into a really good program. It's still a good program in the years since his departure. He obviously did something right. It didn't crumble. Also, don't forget that he even had Bowling Green playing some really good football before he went to Utah. The secondy reason I give him the edge: I'm a huge Gators fan. We'll also see how good he is when he no longer has the best player in the country playing QB.

i think all these guys are great. but...(& i know this may sound a little like the knock against phil jackson) are they great coaches or simply the product of coaching at great football programs? or a little of both? or were they just wise enough to accept jobs at such establishments. i think ole ball coach (steve spurrier) is a great coach. just like urban, he flourished at FL but is having to work his butt off for winning seasons at the USC of the east. personally i think mike leach (texas tech), chris peterson (boise st.), mike london (richmond), greg schiano (rutgers), butch davis (unc), turner gill (buffalo), & jim leavitt (south florida) are just some of the names we should also consider.

Joe Paterno is still in that list. The last of the old style coaches to really have any kind of lasting success.

Pete Carroll, hands down. How do you continue to replace Heisman after Heisman with new talent consistently featured on ESPN every fall AND have so much of that top talent run so deep on his team. With his ability to replace player after player AND proving he can consistently win the big games, the conversation comes to rest with Pete Carroll.

Unless of course you'd like to focus on his cross town rival coach, Mr. Rick Neuheisel currently at UCLA. He defininetly deserves some conversation for being one of the most INFLUENTIAL coaches over the past decade single handedly bringing down two Div. 1 Programs. Let's all raise our glasses to his fine work at Washington and Colorado...thanks Rick, I will continue to blame the woes of the Colorado program on you! Here's to round 3 at UCLA! Hey, third time's charm, right???!!!
